The Kember Chronicles is the story of Thomas Kember, as told by Thomas Kember in ten separate chapters, or chronicles. Less than a year after being discharged from the Army, Kember first tells of his journey to Phoenix, Arizona where, by sheer accident, he began his professional boxing career with less than three days' notice. Not expected to win, Kember knocks out his opponent in only twnety-one seconds. From there, his odyssey and rise through the ranks of professional boxing takes a strange, circuituous route. After having misadventures with a retired intelligence officer, a diminutive Laundromat owner, a pair of Nazi hunters and other assorted characters, Thomas finally settles down in Otero, New York to concentrate on his boxing career. After his eight-year professional career comes to an end, Thomas takes a job as a "factotum" in a telephone repair facility. He quickly learns that the legitimate business world is as rife with schemers and crooks as the world of professional boxing. Unable to attain any satisfaction out of a "regular" job, Thomas resumes his boxing career, with bittersweet, surprising results.
The Kember Chronicles is more than one man's journey through one of the toughest, most demanding careers a man could choose, it is also a story of the deconstruction of the so-called American Dream.
