Fascinating information. Great purchase! Anyone who has interest in gaining knowledge should take a look into Time books. Yay science!
Good stuff for above average minds.
This book provides valuable information on present scientific research in Cosmology, Genetics, Medicine, Brain Studies, Archaeology, Technology, Physics, Zoology, Earth Science, Chemistry. A work for the general public its descriptions are simple, and clear very readable. It is possible for the layman to learn much from this book. I enjoyed reading up on a whole host of questions that concern me, and I learned much from the book.
The book is not however what it is hyped to be. It does not focus exclusively on discoveries, and it is far more optimistic about developments in certain areas than there is presently a real right to be.
To take one area as example its description of the human search for extraterrestial life centers on exoplanents and the Kuiper Telescope's vastly increasing the numbers we have for them. It does not touch upon any of the deeper questions involved with discovery of and communication with extraterrestials. For instance recently Stephen Hawking among others has argued we should not be signaling to them , and searching for them as they might well be aggressive and vicious. This argument perhaps sounds silly but it has to be put alongside the cheerleader enthusiasm of a Carl Sagan who thought it simply obvious and right that we make Contact with extraterrestials.
The Cosmology section here does not deal with this question. It speaks about the formation of Comets in the Oort clouds and presents a new theory as to their creation as part of the formation of a whole set of stars together.
There is much information in the book and again I think it should be valuable to the general reader, and especially young people eager to learn about what mankind is exploring now and is likely to explore in the near future.
