The Chinese poems are presented with pristine clarity in another language, i. e. English in this case. It is not exactly a translation in the strictest sense of that literary operation-- but rather, a re-enactment of the original work in the beats and tempos of a foreign language. The author is able to assume the personality of the original poet, relive that specific moment of poetic inspiration, and express the beauty of the original genius in its entirety, with hardly anything lost in the process. The superb grasping of the metaphors with an infusion in the verses with a musicality that is both creative and charming give the translated work a freshness that is unlike any other.
Ever since I was a child growing up in China, my mother would read for me beautiful and inspiring Chinese poems in Mandarin. After growing up in the US, my ability to read and write Chinese has greatly diminished. With Ben Lau's masterful re-enactment of these Chinese poems into their corresponding meaning in English, I am able to enjoy them once again. This book is truly one of a kind and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in becoming immersed in the wonder of Chinese poetry.
